"Understanding Youth Mental Health Needs in SJC"

Based on the 2022–2025 Community Health Needs Assessments, KidsData, and county behavioral health reports, here are the main gaps:

Shortage of youth-specific mental health providers

San Joaquin has ~33% fewer providers per capita than the CA average. Pediatric behavioral health specialists are especially limited.

• Crisis care for youth

Lack of youth-specific crisis stabilization units (until the Be Well Campus opens in 2027). Few alternatives to emergency departments.

• School-based mental health services

Not consistently available across school districts, and where they do exist, staff are often overburdened or part-time.

• Prevention and early intervention services

Resources tend to focus on severe cases—early signs like anxiety, trauma, or grief are often missed or untreated.

• Culturally competent and trauma-informed care

Few programs integrate cultural background, intergenerational trauma, and identity into youth therapy models.

• Transportation and location

Youth in rural parts of the county (e.g., Tracy, Manteca, or Lathrop) often travel far for behavioral services concentrated in Stockton.

• % of youth served from low-income households or foster care: 96%

•Partnerships formed (schools, farms, orgs): 20+

•Youth voices amplified through arts, expression, and public events: 700+

Our organization is dedicated to providing hope and support to those who need it the most. We believe that every child deserves a chance to live a fulfilling life, and that through our efforts, we can make a real difference in our community.

Healing Youth Through Art Therapy

Transforming youth inside out

At Dawl Camp, we believe art isn’t just an activity, it’s a healing tool. For youth facing trauma, bullying, or instability, creative expression becomes a safe space to be seen, heard, and valued.

Why Art ?

Research shows that art-based programs improve mental health, boost self-confidence, and reduce anxiety in youth. That’s why Dawl Camp integrates art into every program from fashion design and storytelling to journaling and painting.
